Most modern laptops have been created with great functionality and self healing capability which makes it smarter more reliable. This is the main reason behind much increased popularity among business or home user, especially for persons who are constantly on the move. As laptop gets older, reduced backup time becomes the nightmare for every laptop user.
So, if your laptop battery not giving proper backup time or shut down very soon after recharging it, your worries may over now as there are some pretty good tweaks which greatly helps in optimizing it's performance and giving your battery maximum mortality time. All you need is to understand this article thoroughly and perform steps effectively.
Optimize Performance
The faster your laptop works, the minimum resources will be used by computer’s hardware and software. Therefor, the very first step you need to do is to make your laptop as fast as possible. So that you can get maximum time to finish any ongoing task before plugging it back to power supply. Here you can find a helpful article on how to boost performance of a PC or Laptop
Defrag Laptop Volumes Frequently
De-fragmentation keeps volume data properly arranged, therefor making any read/write requests performed more efficiently. In feedback, laptop hard drive will use fewer computer resources to access data from volumes which help in increasing battery performance.
Unplug hardware
Detach any hardware (not in use) connected to your laptop as it consume constant power and thus reduces battery life cycle. For ex: Any speaker connected to laptop sucks continuous battery power, even if you don't hear any songs.
Disable Bluetooth or Wireless Internet Connections
Consider disabling Bluetooth or wireless internet hardware, as it will also contributes role in discharging battery.
Avoid Using Computer Graphics
Playing computer games, watching videos or listening songs will automatically initiate the graphic card attached to hardware. If you want to extend laptop recharging lifecycle, avoid doing those activities on battery power.
Reduce Screen Resolution
This is the most convenient yet effective task to increase battery life. Most laptop comes with functionality to automatically dim lights and save power, but you can do it on your own by going to display settings.
Remove CD/DVD
CD/DVD will continue to spin in drives until it is removed which consumes huge battery power and forces laptop to start a new lifecycle.

Note: Every time you plug laptop charger to AC supply, a new lifecycle will be started. Any laptop battery can give maximum of 500-512 lifecycle, after which it requires replacement. Therefore, the more frequently you start new lifecycle, the shorter mortality age of your laptop battery. It's better to plug battery charges to AC power only when 10% or less battery power is remaining.
Remove 3D or normal Screen saver
Disable screensaver can greatly extend the battery power & computer performance too. You may disable it by going to desktop>right click+chose 'properties'>screensaver.
Inbuilt Power Options:
An inbuilt power option helps you to shut down laptop uses or only hard drives to save more battery life. If you don't know how to perform the steps, see below:

An inbuilt power option helps you to shut down laptop uses or only hard drives to save more battery life. If you don't know how to perform the steps, see below:
- Go to control panel
- Find 'Power Options' settings.
- Double Click on it
- A new pop-up window will open, may looks like this:

- Click on 'Power Schemes' tab, and set it to max. Moreover, do some tweaks for laptop when running on battery power.
Hibernate or Sleep Mode, Which one would be better?
People think these two options as same because they normally stop monitor supply, don’t play any songs etc., but in reality both are highly different from each other. In Sleep (or Stand By) mode, computer turns off the hard drive and display but internal memory will continue to run which takes constant power supply. Whereas in 'Hibernate option’, computer shuts down itself and thus greatly saves battery power. So, it's advisable to always go with hibernate option when you don't use the laptop.
Environment is a slow poison?
Heating environment can kill laptop battery slowly. Avoid using or putting it from direct sunlight, heating room and in bed.
Use Latest Driver/Software:
This sounds silly but much helpful in optimizing performance and reducing resource uses. Latest software/drive is designed to use minimum system resources and power supply.
Proper Adapter:
Duplicate or not the one provided with laptop can draws negative impact on laptop battery such as low battery performance, minimum backup time. Always prefer to use the adapter with the defined specification on laptop user manual.
Removing Battery:
Laptop batteries should be removed, if you plan to don't use it for quite some time. Ensure that the remaining battery power is more than 50% or higher.
There are many exploits already available around you which damage the laptop battery and reduce its average age. Though, you can extend it if ready to follow above discussed guidelines.
