How to tackle with external hard drive failure errors

Now a day’s computer is a basic need of every human being whether you are working or not. While working on your PC/Laptops most of the time happens that we stuck in the situation like:

  • hard drive does not detected
  • hard drive detected but can't access data of the hard drive
  • coming any unusual sounds from your hard drive etc

These errors don’t mean that the hard drive gets crashed or there is any failure in the hard drive. To understand more about hard drive failure, take a closer look of hard drive structure which will help you to diagnose the problem.

A hard drive is the device used to store large amounts of digital information in computers & consists of a motor, spindle, platters, read/write heads, actuator and electronics.

Basically there are two types of HDD failure found:

1-Physical failure
2-Logical failure

A physical failure means there is an electronic malfunction or internal hardware failure in the drive. If you hear any unusual sounds coming from your drive, shut down your system and used it to another system. In most cases, hard drive gets work but if again same unusual sounds coming don’t attempt to use it again. It indicates that hard drive head may get damaged. This can cause a complete and permanent data loss. The only way to recover from a physical failure is to either replace the drive or send it to a recovery center if you want back your data.

While logical failure is just vice-versa of physical failure. Logical failures occur as a result of bad sectors in hard drives or data corruption from another source such as destroyed file table, file system get crashed.  In this case, hard drive gets detected but you do not see any data inside. Data may sometimes in this case shows as 0 bytes. In this case data recovery software helps to recover inaccessible data.

Conclusion: If you get any type of error with your hard drive, first shutdown your PC & connect hard drive to another system, if error persists again replace the drive. If you want your data back go for recovery center if physical failure persists otherwise go for hard drive recovery software.
